Recently, there has been a wave of consolidation in the shipping industry. COSCO SHIPPING Holdings Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as COSCO SHIPPING Holdings) will acquire Orient Overseas (International) Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as OOCL ) . After the shipping business, the container shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) was formed, and we can see how the large companies will arrange their shipbuilding business after the integration.

At present, OOCL is about to complete the five 22,000-teu container ships ordered by Samsung Heavy Industries, and the company has established a good cooperative relationship with Samsung Heavy Industries.

However, after COSCO SHIPPING Holdings acquires OOCL, the latter is more likely to order ships in domestic shipyards.

Ship brokerage sources believe that COSCO Shipping can obtain financing to sign shipbuilding orders in Chinese shipyards, so the price will be very attractive, and the shipyards under COSCO Shipping are fully capable of building the largest container ships.

Almost all of COSCO SHIPPING's current container newbuilding projects are built in Chinese shipyards.

***It is worth mentioning that COSCO SHIPPING ordered six 19,000-teu series container ships at Nantong COSCO Kawasaki Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. and Dalian COSCO Kawasaki Ship Engineering Co., Ltd.

Zhoushan COSCO Shipyard and Guangdong COSCO Shipyard are also building small container ships for COSCO SHIPPING.

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co Ltd is building nine 21,000-teu containerships for COSCO Shipping.

Japan's three shipping giants - Mitsui, NYK and Kawasaki Kisen each have their own preferred shipyards.

Kawasaki Kisen has been developing business relationships with Imabari Shipbuilding and Shoei Kaiun.

Kawasaki Kisen has ordered LNG carriers, VLCCs, bulk carriers and car carriers at Imabari Shipbuilding, as well as five 14,000-teu series container ships for the Imabari Group.

Imabari is building a drydock under its Marugame for the construction of ultra-large container ships, which seems to be fully capable of satisfying ONE's appetite.

Imabari, however, has also formed an alliance with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which is in talks to share shipbuilding capacity.

MOL is embroiled in a court dispute with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and it is unclear whether MOL will be willing to sign a newbuilding order at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

NYK and IHHI have also established container ship business ties. IHHI merged with Universal Shipbuilding to form the Nippon Shipbuilding Union. Shipowner NYK ordered five 14,000-teu container ships.

Nippon Yusen Co., Ltd. ordered the container ship at the Kure Port Shipyard under the Nippon Shipbuilding Corporation. The Kure Port Shipyard is one of the oldest shipyards in Japan, but the efficiency of building large container ships is not good. If the ONE partners want to enter the ultra-large container market, they may look elsewhere for shipyards.

Nantong COSCO Kawasaki Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. and Dalian COSCO Kawasaki Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. are modern large-scale shipbuilding enterprises jointly established by China and Japan Kawasaki Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. These two companies may become candidates.

The source said that Kawasaki Heavy Industries' participation is a driving force for Japanese partners to order new ships in China.
